It's Our Choice

Then Joshua said to the people, “Now you have heard the Lord’s words. So you must respect the Lord and sincerely serve him. Throw away the false gods that your ancestors worshiped. That was something that happened a long time ago on the other side of the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Now you must serve only the Lord. “But maybe you don’t want to serve the Lord. You must choose for yourselves today. Today you must decide who you will serve. Will you serve the gods that your ancestors worshiped when they lived on the other side of the Euphrates River? Or will you serve the gods of the Amorites who lived in this land? You must choose for yourselves. But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” (‭Joshua‬ ‭24‬:‭14-15‬ ERV)

One of the hardest things in life is to make a choice. We often waver in what we want to do, what we should do, and what we need to do. It took me realizing that there was a difference between them all. When we learn that what we want do can be, then what is necessary and should be done our lives can be more fulfilling. The children of Israel only knew a life based on how things were and not how things are. Joshua was trying to take their minds to another level with a choice. When they were out in the wilderness they chose to complain and not to see how God blessed them.

Have you ever found yourself falling into the same cycles as family members? This is what Joshua meant when he said to the children of Israel now you have heard the Lord’s words. So you must respect the Lord and sincerely serve him. Throw away the false gods that your ancestors worshiped. We have heard God's Word but we still worship the same worry, stress, bitterness, and anger gods that our ancestors did. The word worship means showing strong respect and honor to. We have been showing more respect to our problems and our past more than we have been with God. We have put or gods over what God says.

We have to learn that our choices don't only affect us but they affect the people connected to us. Joshua made a choice for his family. We have unknowingly made choices for our family that have bound them into conditions we have set for them. We have to learn the weight of our choices. Joshua learned that we can be connected by choices of our ancestors. We serve what they serve, we do what we saw them do, or we say what they said, the bondages our ancestors chose to have we picked up. Joshua chose serving God for his family; what have we chosen for our family? Even worse what have we chosen for ourselves?

Our lives look like our choices and our choices look like our bondages. We serve what rules over us and if our problems, bitterness, anger, or insecurities rule over what "God" says then those things become our "god". We have to make a choice to make better choices and when we make a bad choice don't focus on it or beat ourselves up. Just know we make hundreds of choices during the day and a lot of them are right, so don't let the wrong ones turn into bondage for ourselves and our family. Joshua made a choice for his family that changed the course of their lives. Today is a good day to make a choice not just to serve God, but to stop serving problems, stress, worry, anger, or bitterness. His Word says cast our cares on Him for He cares for us we don't need to serve "gods" when we can serve a mighty God. Chose today whom we are going to serve.
